Rust is the number-one enemy of any Australian classic-car project. Left alone it spreads under paint, eats structural metal and destroys resale value. The good news: with the right system you can stop rust permanently — no panel-beating shop required.
Why rust keeps coming back
Most "rust treatments" fail because they only paint over the problem. Surface rust traps moisture and oxygen against bare metal, so it keeps converting steel to iron oxide under the coating. To stop it for good you have to remove what you can, chemically convert what you can't, then seal the metal so air and water can never reach it again.
The 4 stages of stopping rust
- Stage 1 — Strip & de-rust. Remove loose rust, paint and grease so your treatment can bond. Shop prep & rust removal →
- Stage 2 — Convert & seal. Lock the metal away with a rust-encapsulating sealer like KBS RustSeal or POR-15.
- Stage 3 — Prime. Key the sealed surface for topcoat. See primers & tie-coats →
- Stage 4 — Topcoat. Finish in a tough chassis or body coat that looks factory-fresh. Browse topcoats →
Do you need to sandblast?
No. Products like KBS RustBlast and Brunox chemically etch and convert rust, so you can treat panels and chassis rails by hand. Sandblasting is great for badly pitted metal, but it isn't essential for most restorations.
How long does it last?
Done properly, a sealed and topcoated panel will outlast the rest of the car — these are the same coatings used on concours restorations and 4WD chassis that live in the worst Australian conditions.
